How do you get to the East Cove Unit?

The East Cove Unit is only accessible by boat. The entrance is located through the Grand Bayou Boat Bay at the southeast corner of Calcasieu Lake. A map of the refuge can be obtained from the Visitor Center at Cameron Prairie NWR.

How can I get a castnetting permit?

The permits can be picked up at the Cameron Prairie Visitor Center and through the mail.

Is a fishing license needed to go crabbing?

but other forms of taking crabs such as liftnets and traps require the possession of a state fish license.



What is the limit on shrimp?

The limit is listed within the refuge permit. It is a five gallon bucket per boat per day. A refuge castnetting permit is needed.

Is the Grand Bayou Boat Bay open?

That information is accessible 24 hours a day by calling the East Cove Hotline 337/598 4235. When the boat bay is closed the refuge is closed to all public use.

Good stuff Gerald. This is the first that I've heard of anyone needing a cast netting permit behind the weirs. I'm going to send them an email & try to get some clarification of the rules as they have many different set of them posted.

I would send it to a specific person, like the refuge manager.
Most of this info. is written by the feds., not a refuge employee, but the employee's and manager should be able to get things changed.

I sent an email yesterday, requesting a "cast net permit".

I also included information on the "broken bumper" on the fence crossing the bayou.

I suggest you call the office. I did this a several years ago and was give the managers cell number so I could talk with him. He was very nice.....but not sure if this is the same person now.

Before Rita there used to be a box of brochures on the sign with a permit on the bottom that you had to sign and keep with you while in the refuge.
It was free and it was mainly to ensure that you knew the regulations. It may have been back when the East Cove unit was part of Sabine Refuge.

No. I'm really not too shocked about it either. It's more cost effective to issue tickets.........

How wide is that boat bay ??? I eased up close one day and it looked pretty tight...
