i have a 20x36 weldcraft tunnel with a 40 yamaha, i was thinking about adding width to the bottom by simply welding 3x3 aluminum angle riht to the edge of the bottom and then as straight up to the gunwales as possible to get a little more planing surface. suggestions? cons?

The sides of mass produced boats are kind of thin. I think it might work, but the sides may need to be beefed up or if you hit bottom or the bank, it might break the thin aluminum next to the weld.
You might add some floatation cells to the back, on each side of the motor to keep the ass end higher when taking off.

Adds a couple more feet and a lot more floatation to the boat.
